The End of Coding Interviews As We Know Them

The coding interview — whiteboard, algorithm puzzle, no help — was always a strange ritual. In this episode we look at why AI has made it impossible to keep pretending it works.

We get into the assumption underneath it: that the job is done alone, from memory, without docs, colleagues or tools — which was never true and is now absurd, given the puzzle is often something AI does in seconds. We’re fair to hiring teams, whose real problem is that judgement is hard to score and puzzles are easy.

And we talk about what we actually want to know about a candidate — can they make a vague problem precise, catch the plausible-but-wrong answer, and change their mind — none of which a recall test can tell you.
